著名的《貓和老鼠》動畫片是制片人弗雷德·昆比、導演威廉·漢納及約瑟夫·巴伯拉於1939年創作的。繼第一個動畫短片《貓得到靴子》大獲成功後,25年中米高梅電影公司拍制了100多部《貓和老鼠》動畫片。這套動畫片完全以鬧劇為特色,情節十分熱鬧。

《貓和老鼠》(又譯《湯姆和傑裡》Tom Jerry)是當今舉世聞名的動畫片,它的創造者威廉·漢納(William Hanna)及約瑟夫·巴伯拉(Joseph Barbera)是美國好萊塢動畫界的“傳奇人物”。
威廉·漢納出生於新墨西哥梅爾羅斯,七歲時隨父母遷居加利福尼亞,長大後,曾先後學習過工程學、新聞學和音樂。20世紀30年代美國經濟大蕭條時期,他在一家動畫工作室打零工,擔任故事編輯工作,雇主很快發現了他的才華,因而他不斷地得到提拔,直至成為獨立的動畫片導演。
卡通畫家約瑟夫·巴伯拉出生於紐約,自幼就有繪畫天賦,起初他在一家銀行工作,業余時間入迷地從事動畫創作。他不同尋常的天賦與勤奮使他很快在一家動畫工作室找到了自己喜愛的工作。
1937年漢納和巴伯拉第一次在米高梅電影公司動畫工作室相遇。1938年漢納從事動畫片《樂一通》(Looney Tunes)與《梅裡小旋律》(Merrie Melodies)的創作,巴伯拉在繪制動畫片《特裡通》(Terrytoons)。漢納具有喜劇天賦和著名導演的組織才能,巴伯拉具有卓越的繪畫天才,他們都認識到應該結成合作關系,從此開始了幾十年的成功合作。1939年他們共同為米高梅電影公司執導動畫片《貓咪搞到了靴子》(Puss Gets the Boot),當時動畫片中的貓叫Jasper,老鼠叫Jinx。漢納的故事編得十分生動,巴伯拉形象繪制得十分出色,特別是貓和老鼠的表情充滿了動人的幽默情趣,1940年這部動畫片的第一集問世後便大為轟動,受到無數觀眾的歡迎。
由於米高梅電影公司不喜歡動畫片中這兩個主角的名字,於是舉行讀者競選,最後改成了現在的湯姆和傑裡。
《貓和老鼠》完全以鬧劇為特色,情節十分熱烈。湯姆是一只常見的灰白色家貓,它有一種強烈的欲望,總想抓住與它同居一室卻難以抓住的老鼠傑裡,它不斷地努力驅趕這些討厭的房客,但總是遭到失敗。而實際上它在追逐中得到的樂趣遠遠超過了捉住老鼠,即使偶爾捉住了傑裡,結果也不知究竟該怎麼處置這只老鼠!
《貓和老鼠》采用了貓與鼠的原型,他們的惡作劇非常有趣,不論游戲多麼激烈緊張,傑裡都知道它不會受到任何真正的傷害,而湯姆則總是難免受些皮肉之苦。傑裡與尿布小灰鼠塔菲同住在這個人家的老鼠洞裡,看起來像是被湯姆監視著,但傑裡卻非常機靈,總能使湯姆狡詐的詭計適得其反,總能讓它自食其果。
這個機靈老鼠與笨貓的故事,堪與米老鼠和唐老鴨的故事相媲美。沒有動物世界中恃強凌弱的殘酷,只有兩個鄰居之間的日常瑣事和紛爭,諸如小老鼠傑裡偷吃了湯姆的奶酪,湯姆把捕鼠器放到了傑裡的洞門口等等,中間穿插的無數惡作劇和幽默片斷,讓人感受到久違的天真快意。它們之間的關系常在一瞬間發生變化——化敵為友或勢不兩立:為敵時絞盡腦汁,互不相讓;為友時,親如兄弟,誰也不記仇。
