“連句”是一種日本特有的文學形式，有些類似中國的對聯，是由復數的歌人合作完成，前一人吟出稱為“發句”的上句，後一人以意思相關的“舉句”相對。本作將日本著名的連句作品松尾芭蕉七部集《冬之日》動畫化，由川本喜八郎任監督，邀請了久裡洋二、高畑勲、山村浩二以及其他日本及國外著名的35位動畫家共同參與制作，采用了水彩、油畫、水墨畫、人形劇、ＣＧ繪圖等多種表現形式
已知來自英國，美國，俄羅斯和其他國家的大師大師。 俄羅斯尤裡Norstein和亞歷山大彼得羅夫（由奧斯卡獲獎片“老人與海”）等參與。
這部不到四十分鐘的短片拍攝於2003年，聚集了一群風格迥異的動畫作家。
連句原本就是集體創作的結晶，找不同的動畫作家來诠釋真是再合適不過。
這次參與創作的人數比三百多年前芭蕉和門人的連句沙龍可是熱鬧多了。演繹出的映像也更加豐滿。
如果說芭蕉的沙龍講求的是心有靈犀的話，動畫作家們可以說是在映像的空間裡進行著個性的比拼。
俳句是留白的藝術，而動畫在這裡成了延伸的藝術，兩者結合，可謂美妙的交響。
松尾芭蕉的俳句其實應該叫“發句”，所謂發句，就是俳諧連歌的第一句。所謂俳諧連歌，就是連歌的通俗大眾版。所謂連歌，就是把五七五七七音的和歌分為五七五，七七上下兩部分，用接力的形式即席吟詠。這是王公貴族的風雅活動，也算一種集體創作。到了芭蕉的年代，連歌終於開始在平民之間普及，當然是有錢的平民——富裕商人。當然他們玩的是普及版的俳諧連歌即連句。
芭蕉是專業“俳諧師”，靠教有錢人吟誦連句為生。芭蕉的門人（實際是他的飯票）遍天下，尤其集中在江戶、大阪，名古屋三地。芭蕉和門人創作的連句記錄輯為七部，名為《芭蕉七部集》。第一部即《冬の日》，是象征“蕉風俳諧”成立的名作。
連句格式大多沿襲自連歌，最常見的有由三十六句構成的歌仙和一百句的百韻。
動畫片《冬の日》的題材其實只是同名句集的第一段，這組連句的形式即歌仙。由五七五音和七七音兩種詩型交互應和，共三十六句。每句吟詠的季節、題材都有規定。如何應和前句並為後人營造發揮的余地就看各人了
